Martin Luther King, Jr., Day 2012

We're a little late (actually VERY late) with our appreciation of Dr. King, Jr., post.

Peace. Love. Cooperation. Understanding. Acceptance. Compassion. When I think of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s messages these words come to mind. Those words describe the measure of what we, as men and women, should endeavor to represent.

You know, I was lucky growing up! I had a mom who loved me enough to show me how to love other people. My grandparents taught me about loving others. The people I had around me were all different than I was, so I could learn to see past skin color and see and know the person in that skin--those were the people I made my friends. It becomes even most awesome to realize that, as an adult, I have such an array of friends--truly great people that I get to see on an every day basis--who are all so different from me and I embrace those differences because that is what makes those good friends such wonderful human beings. I forego the thoughts of skin color, of nationality, of heritage, of background, of creed...and I go straight to the soul of who that person is and that is the part of them I love most of all.

Now, excuse me a moment while I get preachy, but I think we hear too often of folks who claim a certain religion, and yet they don't define that religion at all! If you can't live with someone in this life because they are different than you, then how do you expect to live with them in the next life? Jesus Christ surrounded himself, and made disiciples of, some of the lowest folks he could find. If those kinds of folks are good enough for Jesus, shouldn't you be a little more willing to accept someone for their differences instead of demeaning or judging them? I mention this because it's not too far stretched from Jesus' teachings that Martin Luther King, Jr., taught. And when I think of Jesus' teachings, I think of a few words: Peace. Love. Cooperation. Understanding. Acceptance. Compassion.

I'm not saying MLK is Jesus; but, I'm saying that he was a powerful man, and still is, and his teachings were right on spot with what Jesus tried to tell people. As far as I'm concerned, it couldn't hurt to be a little more like either of them!

So, now on to the closing: As a kid growing up, I wanted to make a difference in how people accepted each other, so when you read a Muley comic strip or watch a puppet show, you'll notice that he's best friends with a dog and a duck, his cousins are a horse and a donkey, and his other friends are a cow, another duck and another dog. And then there's Missy--we're still not sure what's going on there with her and Muley; but, the point is, that no matter how different your species, or skin color, may be you are still special and wonderful in your own way. And, if these critters can get along as friends no matter how different they are in species or personality, can't we?

To have a pot of gold, one color; or to have a bunch of friends? I choose the latter.

I'm the proud president of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association, as you know, and we are celebrating our 25th anniversary in May; so, to start the year off right we're having an art show at the DeSoto Arts Council in Hernando, MS, a quick 20 minute ride south of Memphis. "The Process" is a theme we like to use to show how much work actually goes into the art of cartooning: idea, note, doodle/sketch, thumbnail, pencils, inks, colors, letters...it's very detail oriented work that can take hours to complete. This show shares that work with you.

I will be on hand at the reception working on Muley Comix comic strips live and in person for part of the reception as a demonstration, explaining the tools, techniques, thought processes. Who knows, Muley may even show up!

Christmas Message from Muley the Mule and Roy Duck

Well, Sunday night I walked by the Christmas tree while Muley and Roy Duck were doing some kind of thing for the video camera. As usual, though, I kind of just left them there to do their thing. I did a quick doodle of it in my sketchbook and shared it on Muley's Facebook Page.

So, earlier today I was asked by Muley and Roy Duck if I would edit this together for them, and here is our Christmas Message to you (click the TV icon below to see the show):

Of course, there is a strong message in "The Little Drummer Boy." It was written in 1941 and performed in 1955 by the Trapp Family Singers, also known as the family featured in the Julie Andrews film "The Sound of Music" (one of my all-time favorites). But, the meaning? The song is the story of a poor boy who goes to the side of infant Jesus and, with Mary's approval, plays his drum for him. It's a simple gift, and is one that caused the baby to smile at the little drummer boy.

You know, it's simple to forget the story of the Nativity and easy to ignore the message behind the Christian celebration of Christmas; but, foregoing the idea of expensive gifts we see that even the most minimal gifts mean something. It's those gifts from the heart and given with love that mean the most! The drawn cards, the handmade ornaments, the things people do with their talents.

So, no matter what you celebrate or how you celebrate it, we can all agree on this: In this season of celebration, keep those you know close to your heart, and those in need closer! Volunteer when the chance arises, share with those who don't have, and above all: LOVE! Only with love can we have peace and good will among all of us.

2011 RMH Breakfast With Santa a Success!!

The Ronald McDonald House of Memphis' 'Breakfast with Santa' was a big hit today! Muley was excited as he donned his new 'elf shirt' for the event, and we dashed away to the RMH! We celebrated the holiday season with food, song, and fun crafts...and Muley got to play along with everyone! Such as our visit to a late-night diner after this year's Memphis Comics and Fantasy Convention! I did the top row of doodles, and he produced a very fine catwoman!

Kev's Review of "The Muppets": Spoilers Abound!

Okay, so, this is my review of “The Muppets” and it is very, very long. Folks have all asked me, “Well, what’d you think?” These are my thoughts about the movie. You earn 10 points if you read the whole thing. What can you do with those points? Nothing, but it’s fun to give points to folks (and probably fun to try and keep a tally of these points). So, blink and rub your eyes and get ready ‘cause here it comes:

So, there I am at the end of “The Muppets,” and the credits have closed. Lights come up, and I’m totally disappointed! I cannot believe that there wasn’t an Easter-egg at the end of the credits, and, even worse, that I waited for 12 whole years, and THIS is what they give me?

Come on, I’m a Muppets fan, Disney! I’m what some call part of the “old school fans,” and have so much time (39 years, in fact) and tons of emotion (maybe I’m bi-polar?) invested in these characters that I am screaming aloud about how you’ve given me only this?!

Only two hours of solid, pure and extreme happiness, laughter and entertainment when I wanted several hours, or even days’ worth. Yes, this was a visual, emotional and heavenly brick wall that I was happy as heck to slam into face first. If nothing else, bring on The Muppet Show seasons 4 and 5.

In the meantime, yes, all that above is a compliment. A big one, in fact. I want more and I want it now. The movie absolutely exceeded my expectations. And why? Here’s where the review comes in. Of course, I’m a fan and it is my job to be nitpicky, but I hope to also be as positive as I actually do feel about the movie, story, characters, songs…I loved it all and want more. Immediately! Fair warning! There are SPOILERS.

MUSIC

I’m choosing to discuss the music first because, as all fans know, The Muppets have always been connected to music. Even as far back as when Jim and Jane Henson were performing “Sam and Friends” to records. As a matter of fact, some of the most memorable Muppet moments are around songs.

The original songs are as memorable as any that The Muppets have performed in the past. Of course, Paul Williams’ “The Rainbow Connection” is included and “The Muppet Show Theme” is performed anew so there are some things we’re accustomed to. But, there are some great songs that I have been singing since I first saw the movie: “Life’s a happy song,” an opening theme that includes the entire feeling for the movie; “Pictures in my head” which Kermit sings as a lament for the current position of The Muppets and will choke you up; and “Man or Muppet” which Gary (Jason Segel) and Walter sing when they are trying to learn who they are and what their place in life is. Walter performs “The Whistling Caruso” which is beautiful and a most wonderful musical moment that will leave tears in your eyes.

While there are more great original songs, there are some modern-day songs you hear on the radio that has been covered by the Muppets, such as “Forget You” which you’ll cluck along to with Camilla and the chicks (chickens, that is!) and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” appears in the form of The Muppet Barbershop Quartet. Nitpick#1: There were some non-original songs that appear in the film that are very well-known (“Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” by Paul Simon, “We Built This City” by Starship) which were performed by the original singers but should have been covered by the Muppets. During The Muppet Theater’s clean-up, “We Built This City” should have been performed over the montage similar to “Can You Picture That” and the Studebaker re-paints in the first movie.

But, does “Forget You” which has appeared in many other productions than it probably needs to have appeared limit the timelessness of the movie? “Single Ladies” by Beyonce and “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga, for example, are two very good songs by two very great artists but the songs are used to death! Still, the Muppets have always done covers of popular (and obscure) songs. If “Forget You” hadn’t been performed by Camilla and the Chickens, I probably would have to really nag on this harder; but, it’s been pulled-off in a funny and entertaining way!

I also recall that all of the movies that the Muppets have starred in have always had original songs in them (except Muppets from Space)…but, correct me on that if I’m wrong.

Two other original songs that stick out are “Me Party” which any scorned woman would be able to connect with, as Mary (Amy Adams) and Miss Piggy share with us—who needs a man when you can do your own thing your own way? Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) on the other hand performs (what several have said is) an out-of-place rap song about his being rich; but, isn’t that what villains do? The wrong thing at the wrong place at the wrong time? I thought it was perfect and fit his place in the movie just right; however, until you hear the song on the motion picture soundtrack you don’t know Richman’s motivation to destroy the Muppets other than his lust for oil and more money.

STORY

As mentioned, some of the songs connect with the story line. Unfortunately, Tex Richman’s rap is shortened and you only get hints at the very end about why he hates the Muppets, much less the very ending which hints at how the Muppets win everything back at the end of the movie and why (aw, c’mon—I didn’t give anything away! You know the Muppets are going to win in the end).

Keeping the movie moving with 4 different story lines (The Muppets getting back together, Walter’s search for who he is, Gary and Mary’s relationship, Tex Richman’s evil plan) is hard work; but, they pull it off beautifully! Yes, the end is a little rushed and you miss (maybe it was cut from the film) when Richman finds redemption (one thing you have to say about villains in a Muppet movie is that, unlike a Disney movie, they don’t fall to their death—there is almost always redemption, jail, just desserts or cowardly running away).

I do wish they had more clearly spelled-out Richman’s reason for being a baddy and how the Muppets earned back what they lost.

Finally, after seeing a bit of a face-off, I expected a bigger, more epic battle between Miss Piggy and Miss Poogy. Something just didn’t seem right that there were only two HI-YAH’s in the film when I’ve seen more epic battles in earlier films (after all, when Piggy goes hog-wild in The Muppet Movie, you see her in stunning action, the two karate chops—while very much in her character—pale in comparison). I want to see her make ham-hock of someone’s chops.

Now, this is going to offend someone and I hope not, but we all remember The Muppet Show had a special celebrity guest star. I can remember being a kid and wondering ‘who the heck is that? Get rid of them and put on the Muppet characters!’ Yes, the movie may have been a little too fleshy (if I can say that); but, the cameos worked well—like in the original 3 films—where they were people in bit parts playing secondary roles to the Muppets. But, today, I look back on The Muppet Show and I wonder about some of the Season One guests ‘who the heck is that? Get rid of them and put on the Muppet chaaracters!’ (I’m pretty consistent, huh?) I’m watching the movie now and I wonder if Jack Black will have the staying power as, say, Milton Berle on The Muppet Show? Or, maybe Berle is no longer relevant to many others besides me; making me wonder now will Jack Black be relevant in 20 years? I certainly hope so! You know, there are those who will see Clint Howard in a movie and say, “Oh, I know him! He’s that guy that was in that movie—what was it?” I know him, but how many do? In 20 years, will Jack Black be that person or will he still be recognized? Right now, I would guess yes; but, how many folks out there remember who Zero Mostel or Avery Schreiber is (die-hard Muppet fans, you don’t count for this question, but automatically earn 9 points for being a fan and knowing who that is). It was a nice re-creation of the John Cleese episode of "The Muppet Show" when the characters kidnapped Cleese, who didn't want to be on the show. But, he famously fits in with the Muppets due to his expressions and behavior—even his image makes me grin. Paired with Animal, it’s a perfect buddy-match!

So, what would the answer have been? When doing the telethon and being told that they needed a celebrity guest star and they couldn’t have ever found one, and the show had still been successful, it would have shown the TV Executive (Veronica? Forgot her name and I’m too lazy to look it up) that the Muppets still got game, yo! However, I’m still very pleased with Jack Black’s performance. He was very funny, fit the role and was a joy to see. I always enjoy him in everything he does and was thankful that, if they have a celebrity guest star, that it was him. Someone with talent, and not some fly-by-night nobody who happens to be a star because they don’t have talent (ie, those Jersey Shore people who have a scheduled cameo in 2012’s ‘The Three Stooges’ movie—more on that after I see the film).

Was I touched by the movie? Absolutely! I even tried to call the phone number for the Muppet Telethon to help them raise the $10million, but (according to this website) the number on the screen was listed as “877-504-8423 is a number reserved by ABC for movies and TV series. Calling it will provide the following short tape recorded message: "Thank you for calling ABC. The number you have reached is a fictional non-working number used for motion picture and television production."

CHARACTERS

Obviously, I love The Muppets. Paired with “Peanuts” they are my influence to do what I do with Muley. So, the core cahracters you know I love. I am very glad, too, to see a return of many other core characters who’ve been put in the background for so long: Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, Rowlf the Dog, Scooter, Beauregard, Camilla. I am also freaking out at finally seeing Thog again, and Uncle Deadly, and Lew Zealand! Everyone did a splendid job of bringing back to life characters who have been gone for more than 30 years. I'm proud of you all.

The Newbies: Gary, Mary and Walter—let’s discuss. When I began seeing a lot of the pre-production news and it was celebrity cameo after celebrity cameo, I got nervous. That’s too much flesh in a Muppet movie. I watch the Muppets to see? Correct: The Muppets (you get 5 points). And then came the announcement that the human stars of the film were cast and, oh my gosh! I felt like we were going to get “Space Jam” or “Looney Tunes: Back in Action” where the characters play second-fiddle to the human stars, I was scared to death. Then, I heard about the “new Muppet” Walter, and I felt like I might be watching the Muppets’ version of “Electra” which wasn’t about Electra at all but more about the little girl she had to protect—would the new film be more about this new character and less about the characters I wanted to see?

And what about another new character named 80’s Robot? Is he the Muppets’ answer to Pee-wee’s Playhouse’s Conky? Or Sesame Street’s long-forgotten Sam the Robot? Or an answer to the long-missing M.A.M.M.A. from The Muppet Show? What is 80’s Robot? AWESOME! This character has had me cracking up, and I hope if there is any cut footage of 80’s Robot that it shows up on the DVD somehow, somewhere.

You know my answer already because I said they beautifully worked 4 stories into one movie with near perfection!

I love Gary and Mary and wish they were my next door neighbors! More so, I love Walter! He’s the embodiment of every Muppets fan in the world. He has a beginning to his life story and how he got involved with The Muppets. All us Muppets fans have that story about how we recognized our first connections to those great characters that Jim Henson created. I even dressed as Walter to go see the movie the first night it was released because of some of the things I had seen just before the film. So, if Gary and Mary would be my neighbors, then Walter would be one of my best Muppets-fan buddies with whom I would call over weekly to have Muppet Marathons! Hmmm…not a bad idea! Who’s game, e-mail me! I think I’m about to start planning Muppet Movie Marathon Mondays! (Can I Trademark that?)

Sorely missed were Johnny Fiama, Sal Manilla and Kermit’s nephew Robin. I also missed seeing Bean Bunny. There would only be one more thing that would have made this feel very old-school to me, and that would have been a Sesame Street character cameo.

In closing about the Characters, I just have to offer up this great compliment: I want action figures of them to match my Palisades action figures! Sure, there were several that I still need to call my Palisades collection complete (Sal Manilla, articulated Robin, Bobo and Bean Bunny); but, now I feel like I need more in the guise of Walter, 80’s Robot, Bobo in a suit (and maybe even the Moopets).

There were so many movie previews that I did not want to ruin the film by watching them, and I can tell by what I’ve seen since that lots of things have been cut from the film and I hope part of the DVD release will be an opportunity to watch the full director’s cut. After all, I waited 12 years for a movie and I can tell you I’d gladly sit through 3 hours of Muppet motion picture without issue.

So, here is my long, giant book about “The Muppets.” Am I a happy fan? Yes, very much so. I saw it twice in theaters during the opening weekend (but, wanted to see it many more times—I’m ready for it to come on DVD promptly so I can watch it over and over and over and…). I’m very proud of all those who worked on the script, the performers of the Muppets, the human actors, and send out a HUGE thanks to Jason Segel who took a long way around to get to Disney and say, “We can do this, let’s do it.” Without that guy we probably wouldn’t have had this film at all, so “Thanks, Jason!”

You can certainly get from the Muppets that you cannot get from anybody else is the togetherness: I saw everyone from parents and kids, teenagers, young adult couples (or groups of friends like I was lucky enough to have with me when I saw the film the first night), and even elderly couples all showing up to watch a very most sensational, inspirational, celebrational, Muppetational film!

So, Diz, bring on a new The Muppet Show TV series and another movie, already! Gimme, gimme, gimme!

Now, stop reading this website for now and GO SEE “THE MUPPETS!”

This Saturday, you might find Muley in Nashville; but, you'll have to look carefully because he'll likely be reading some of his favorite books--namely Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa - Full Circle and Turra: Gun Angel - Bombs and Betrayal (which he got with a special publication). But, what's he going to be in Nashville for? MAW Productions will be at the Nashville Comic and Horror Con October 1 (although it's a two-day convention and also runs Oct. 2).

In Memory of a Great Person

I originally wrote this on Monday evening after hearing of the news that a great man, Earl Kress, was taken from us by that evil, horrible thing known as cancer:

Today, Monday September 19, 2011, equals a very sad day with the news of my pal Earl Kress losing his battle to liver cancer.

At Earl's L.A. Apartment with Pinky and the Brain, for which he won Emmy Awards!

It was back in 2005 as I was planning a trip to Los Angeles, CA, to meet with other puppeteers that a friend of mine from Muppet Central (using the pseudonym WasOnceErnie) sent me a private message saying, “If you need a ride to your hotel from the airport, I’ll be glad to get you.” I didn’t know WasOnceErnie at that time from any other person on the internet; but, I felt, ‘if he’s on Muppet Central, he’s okay by me!’ So, with gratitude, I accepted. “You’ll know me at the airport by the Fozzie Bear t-shirt I’ll have on.” For folks who don’t know, on Muppet Central I am known as “Fozzie Bear,” so it made sense to be looking for me in such a t-shirt.

There was also a plan that I’d return to his place to practice with Muley and his character, Davey Simpson, on camera and watching it on the monitor down below. First, though, he showed me all around his town. We went to the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (where Emmy Awards come from) where I got my photo next to a new Jim Henson sculpture that wasn’t yet opened. He showed me The Jim Henson Company at the old Charlie Chaplin Studios, REN-MAR Studios (which was once named DesiLu Studios and is where ‘I Love Lucy’ was filmed among other great shows), Raleigh Studios (the studio where Muppets Tonight was filmed), from a distance I saw the Hollywood hills letters, went down to see the theater where attendees of MuppetFest saw “The Muppet Show Live” in 2001, and more.

After a great lunch of chili, we went back to his apartment to goof off with puppets in front of the video monitor and camera. While there, Earl took a phone call and I began looking around his living room. I found a large Emmy-looking award and finally asked him, “So, how much did this set you back?” and when he replied, “Nothing, I won that” I leaned in closer and read that it was indeed an actual Emmy Award for Pinky and the Brain. I quickly scanned other things that I’d just looked at and realized that there were more awards that he’d won, then that the comic book pages I thought were collectibles were actually from books he’d written…who was this person? “What do you do for a living again?” He laughed and said, “I write for cartoons, comic books, t.v. shows, movies, do voice-overs…” I looked around again and said, “I shouldn’t be here, then! You’re a big deal, and I only draw a talking mule.” He laughed at me again and said, “Oh, no, no. I’m just a regular guy with a fun job.”

We visited some more and then began playing with Muley and Davey, and then he brought up a puppet of Kermit constructed by a friend of ours named Mike. In the middle of our hilarious exchanges and practice, he got a phone call from someone trying to raise money for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s campaign (or some such) and so he handed it off to me that I played a (bad) Fozzie Bear voice and responded to the guy. I think it’s even on the practice DVD we made.

He drove me down to Disneyland and showed me around there, including the “Aladdin” show that was Broadway-worthy! We also saw the puppeteered Playhouse Disney show which was awesome. Being all Muppets fans we went to see MuppetVision 3D with the other Muppet fans and puppeteers. Riding home to his house we sang Muppet songs in all the different voices we could muster.

We met on Saturday, September 24, 2005, to go to the Museum of Television and Radio with my ol’ pal Matt Laesch. A big Jim Henson celebration was on that day including meeting Cheryl, Then, that night, we met with everyone over Italian dinners to celebrate Jim Henson’s birthday! We went to dinner with a big group of puppeteers including my pal Steve Troop and more. It was pretty funny as we all improvised and then realized that we’d all attracted the entire restaurant as an audience and then we ducked down under the table and began performing for the crowd. Big fun! Earl chose a great restaurant that night. I was always thankful for his hospitality and the fun he showed me in Los Angeles.

One year later, the Mid-South Cartoonists Association put together and produced the educational convention about cartooning called ConSequential. One of our special guests there was Earl Kress. He came out and spoke in classes about writing, editing, cartooning, and puppetry. He was, after all, a talented puppeteer. On the panel with him were myself and our good pal Steve Troop. We had a great time, and even traded our puppets back and forth to sample the puppet construction and joke with the different voices. The end of ConSequential was at a party hosted by Adam and Penny Shaw, and I remember that he’d mentioned that we had a great group of people in Memphis because we were all such good friends.

After the convention was over, we had a chance to go to Graceland and it was probably the most enjoyable trip there I ever had! He was really into the whole “Elvis-thing” and that made it all fun. He was always the most fun to be around and talk to.
Then, I had a chance to go to San Diego Comic Con and folks could find Earl and I playing with the Master Replicas Muppets (when they finally set out Fozzie Bear, he called me on the phone to come over and see it). We went to hear Jerry Beck talk about the worst cartoons ever—and they were—and Earl just laughed and laughed and laughed… It was great hearing him guffaw at the dumb cartoons. We goofed-off over dinner, and talked about the fun things we’d experienced before and were experiencing at SDCC.
Other than e-mails and photos, it was the last chance I had to see him in person.

Earl was very gracious the whole weekend having fun and making fun, enjoying the art…it was a true testament to the great person he was. He’s a man to be respected for his kindness and humbleness. We could all do better to strive to be more like him.

I’d mentioned online earlier that I felt kind of dumb that I never sat down and had a real conversation about “the business” of writing, editing, voice-overs and was reminded: it wasn’t settling for goofy conversations and jokes. It was that we were friends for friends’ sake. And it’s true! I still care about my buddy Earl! He’s a great and wonderful person who will be sorely missed.

Muley and Pals Celebrate Jim Henson in Leland, MS, Sept 24th!

So, you want to see Muley in person? Well, come on down to the Leland, MS, Frog Fest (click the image above) in celebration of Jim Henson's birthday on Saturday September 24th as they dedicate The Rainbow Connection Bridge in Jim's honor!

Everyone has heard the tag-line for Muley and pals as "When the irreverence of The Muppets meets the innocence of Peanuts..." so you can already tell the two inspirations I have with one of them being Jim Henson. Not just the work he's created over the years, and not just his creations, but also his words--almost Buddha-like thoughts about love and peace. I suggest a book on the subject called "It's Not Easy Bein' Green and Other Things to Consider." Jim's inspiration to create characters that everyone would love, and the fun-loving, nearly sibling rivalry, between the characters who would still be friends was a leading creative factor when, as a kid, I began developing Muley's Comix and Stories.

So, this would lead me into discussing our trip next Saturday to Leland, MS, where you can find the Jim Henson Boyhood Museum and the soon to be named Rainbow Connection Bridge at the Leland Frog Fest! Attending the great event will be actress and Muppeteer Fran Brill! If you ever saw the movie "What about Bob?" then you saw her in an acting role as his love-interest.

What'll Muley be doing that day? Well, hanging around as usual while I do all the work; but, you can see the Muley booth schedule below to see what's going on!

Too often in today's time, there are people who battle against one another in our own country. Poor vs. Rich, Ethnicity vs. Ethnicity, Religion vs. Religion...

All of our goal should be finding a way, whatever it may be, to connect together so that all those who died that horrible day did not die in vain, that those brave men and women who die daily fighting for our freedom are not dying in vain, and that we are coming together to be what we should be:

One nation.
Under God.
Indivisible.

Make it your duty now and forever to care about your brother man, and let's show those dumb terrorists that they cannot create division and that individually we're strong Americans, and gathered together we are a strong Nation!

During the day, we'll be doing comic strip and puppetry demonstrations. Also, they are renaming a bridge near the Jim Henson Boyhood Museum as "The Rainbow Connection Bridge" that day, which is also Jim Henson's birthday! If you're around that area, please come out and say hello. We'll also be selling original art and Muppety paintings!
Then, on Sunday, September 25th, you can find him doing his sermon for the kids at
FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH. Services start at 10:30; but, come in at 10 am and go to the Congo Cafe to meet and greet folks. It's really a non-denominational atmosphere and the focus? Love. A good place, and a great art community, too. The picture below you can see him during the August kids' sermon.

Muley got to spend the day today (Thursday, August 25th, 2011) at the RMH helping celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the opening of the house. If you were there and have photos, please share them with us. In the meantime, here is the photo Muley took of himself with his cellphone.

The week started off with the honorary renaming of Alabama Avenue (out front of the RMH) as John "Bad Dog" McCormack Avenue. Everyone will remember him from his many, many years as part of the most awesome radio trio, The Wake-Up Crew, on Rock 103 who raised money for years doing the Wake-Up Crew Radiothon for the RMH. SO, please help celebrate the memory of Bad Dog and further celebrate the RMH's 20th Anniversary! Make a $20 donation in celebration of both!

Those Recent Earthquakes and Thoughts

Yes, yet again Muley is still trying to figure out his speech. So, he's sought the help of one of his more theological pals, Calvin Cow, to help him search. They are going through books galore in hopes of finding something to draw from...

Why does this strip pay a special tribue? Well, on August 28th the dedication of a memorial paying tribute to one of the greatest Americans ever will be happening. Finally, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a great humanitarian who didn't necessarily preach on the advancement of a particular people but rather the peace and tranquility of all races communing and living together, will have a great honor bestowed upon him by those who support and maintain his message of love, acceptance and respect.

In November, we'll be voting for the Mayor of Memphis. Muley wants to have that position. No clue why, but he does. I think it says a lot about a city when a 6 year old talking mule wants to try and fix it. So, recently, he went downtown and submitted his Application for Mayor.

SUPERMAN CELEBRATION 2011 - A Photo Montage

Rather than setting up a photo gallery somewhere, we wanted to offer a video montage of images from our trip to the 2011 Superman Celebration. But, not to be left out, Muley decided he wanted to narrate the images. Yay. Never give a 6 year old a microphone and say, "Okay."

Superman Celebration is held each year in Metropolis, IL, during the 2nd weekend of June. If you haven't been, you should go! It's always fun, and we always say that if you go to Metropolis and don't leave with at least one new friend you did something wrong. Everyone is so nice there: the locals, the visitors, the stars...you'll want to live there.

We love going back each year to see our old friends and make new ones. There is always something to do and something to learn.

This year, Muley was able to perform his show "Muley's Talent(less) Revue" and he also emceed the kids' costume contest. Up and down the street, he stopped for photographs and visited with the attendees, some from as far away as France.

We live in Artists Alley & Writer's Way which hosted Muley, Kevin L. Williams, Martheus and Janet Wade and DaMarco Randle. There was a slew of other great artists, writers, and more! We're always thankful to the City of Metropolis, IL, for the trip and friendships!

Tools and Techniques: The Light Table

Way too long ago, I needed a light table and so that rendered me needing to construct one (because it is less costly). The next big thing I had to do was to discover what items I needed:
-16x20 Picture Frame
-1x4" wood
-16x20" presswood
-Under-the-counter light
-White paint

I formed the 1x4" wood to fit the size of the wooden picture frame (leaving a notch underneath so the under-the-counter light cord can fit through it). Next, I nailed the presswood for the bottom and then painted the entire inside white (to cause the light to reflect outward later). Then, I nailed the frame (open side up so I can get into the light box later) to the 1x4" wood. Next, I attached the under-the-counter light on the inside of the lightbox, closest to the side where I plan to do the majority of the drawing on it. Finally, I added the picture frame on top (after taking the glass out). It is positioned so I can replace the glass later (it is my suggestion to also get some plexiglass that can be placed under the glass--this is so you can use the glass to also cut things with an Xacto if needed, and the plexiglass supports the glass).

And for the grande finale, I painted the exterior blue and yellow, my "corporate colors." The result: a light table that I've used since the early 1990's.

LOLLIPOP TREES EXIST!!

Growing up and in college, folks would tell me that I was drawing the trees all wrong. In college is when the title "lollipop trees" first came into discussion about my round-top foliage on the thin body of the tree. "No tree looks like this," the instructor told me in painting. "Yes, it does," I replied. "Charles Schulz draws the Kite-eating Tree this way. If he does it, it exists."

Nope, I was told it did not exist and I needed to work on my trees. So, instead, I began doing something a little different. But, recently and NOW I think I've changed my mind.

You might say Lollipop Trees don't exist, but nature says they do!!

Muley in Cape Con (Yep, he's bringing some Jetta, too)!

You can find Muley the Mule this weekend at Cape Con, the 6th annual convention in Cape Girardeau, MO. Held at the Osage Centre located at 1625 N Kingshighway Street, this year's convention promises to be chock full of fun!

First on the card (because we're biased) you'll find Muley the Mule, yukkin' it up with folks as they stop by his table for a visit. He'll be promoting his stuff, but also have on hand copies of MAW Productions' "Jetta-Shi: Arrow of Destiny" cross-over book that was written and drawn by Martheus Wade with covers by Billy Tucci who just so happens to be a guest at this year's Cape Con!

Superman Celebration 2011

We're all very happy around here to be heading into Metropolis, IL, for the Superman Celebration! There, you'll find lots of great folks--guests, visitors, hometown folk--and we always say that "if you go to Metropolis and don't leave having made one new friend, then you didn't do something right." We've always made new friends, and are always glad to see and visit with our old friends.

Stormy Weather

So, with May 1, 2011, being the first Sunday of the month and time for Muley's sermon at First Congregational Church, he told a message about storms because (as anyone knows right now) we have had some terrible storms in the Mid-South area, mainly floods. Even our location has become a new Flood Zone which it wasn't before.

Hi, everyone,

We wanted to bring about a simple Happy Easter wish; but, looks like Roy Duck has gotten into a little tiff…

We also wanted to share with you this silly video based on a Muley comic strip from the late 80’s. Now, you can watch the video and then enjoy the original comic strip that caused it to happen!

This comic strip has its roots from way back, and the one you see appeared on Rock 103's website back when they were running the "Funny Pages" as part of their content. This was a webpage dedicated to comics from Memphis cartoonists, most of whom are members of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association.

You'll also notice the name is different than usual in order to appeal to the adult audience. Bob Thaves of "Frank and Earnest" once replied to an e-mail that, "...although the comics are good, you will have issues getting the syndicates to accept the title."

Just before the "Funny Pages" were removed from the website, we did change the title back to Muley Comix.

Sunny Days...

Well, it isn't owned or copyrighted by us, but Kev has decided to make a comic strip based on Sesame Street for fun. This one includes Big Bird and Mr. Snuffleupagus. Hope you find it fun and funny. Oh, and do you see the little Easter egg?

In case you didn't get the "Easter egg:" Big Bird once appeared on Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, which is the show they are watching on TV.

But, what has us REALLY excited? Our good friend, Scott Braun, has a new license plate on his truck! You'll remember him from last year with the "MULEY" license plate that we drew on and sent to him? Well, this year he celebrates SuperMule! Check it out!

Here at Muley's Comix and Stories (yes, that little off-shoot of Kevin L. Williams Productions) would love to send out our happy 122nd birthday wish to Charlie Chaplin...not that he'll be able to see this on his computer or anything.

Still, his comedy has always been inspiring to us, and our appreciation for his life's work is as great today as it was when he was still around.

Completely under-rated, never appreciated enough, we could stand a genius like him in today's world!

At the fan-fabulous convention, MidSouth Con, a few weeks back, there was a 10pm panel discussion about Puppetry in Motion on which the very talented and lovely Mary Robinette Kowal and I had a chance for a little fun. She brought some beautiful puppets from her own collection, and from our studios came a visit from Muley the Mule and Frankie Steinatra. Here are some images from that panel discussion. Oh, and never tell puppeteers they only have an hour for a panel discussion--you need at least TWO hours: one for the puppeteers, and one for the puppets.

Japan Earthquake Relief

Natural disasters are horrible. Especially something like this. It seems as bad or worse than the Haiti earthquake, but more than likely because there is a nuclear reactor melt down. All we can see is that there is horror galore with the loss of life and property. Nobody should ever have to suffer this.

Another thing we don't want to see people suffer is loss of their money when they are trying to help. Lots of folks lost money to fake charities during the Hurricane Katrina and Haiti efforts. To help our friends (you, the reader) we are offering links to the Better Business Bureau because it is good business to work through charities that will do what they say.

That said, the devastation that has happened in Japan due to the earthquake has burdened our hearts and we wish only the best for the people of that country. We are also concerned about others who will care about what has happened there and who will want to make a donation to the relief efforts that is and will be happening there. To protect you, we have done a little research via the Better Business Bureau hoping to help you better help Japan.

Missy thinks of herself as the most lovely girl in the world, and so expects that she'll win the fashion show if you can only help her get to the runway in time!

HOLY COW! MULEY'S PREACHIN'!

Hi, Friends of Muley! We're proud to announce that, beginning tomorrow (Feb. 6, 2011) Muley will begin hosting the Kids' Sermons on the First Sunday of each month at First Congregational Church--which we locals call "First Congo"--located in the historic Cooper/Young district at 1000 South Cooper, Memphis TN 38104 (901)-278-6786. Muley has a history of church involvement, from all the way back in 1988-1991 with First Assembly of God Church in Munford, TN, he was active with his buddy, Buford the Dog, in the Childrens' Church program. Actually, Buford more than Muley. But, Muley does enjoy visiting with his peers--nothing like watching a 6-year-old mule talk to his age-group about something he enjoys.

This Sunday's sermon is going to focus a little on the Super Bowl, and how that concept fits into our own lives (as kids OR grown-ups).

A little behind-the-scenes: Originally, there was a bit of a joke that Muley was going to tell; but, we cut it. It didn't seem to be the kind of thing to actually 'fit' with what we want to do at church. So it doesn't go to waste, here it is now:

Another note about First Congo: They love the arts and creativity, have programs dedicated to a greener earth and lifestyle, and also are very community oriented. On my Facebook page I posted a few notes from some Sundays' worth of information and should begin sharing that again. First Congo partners with the Memphis Food Bank (I'm pretty sure that's correct) and over a year ago began with about 60 families, today reaching over 200 families who might otherwise not have food. (If I find that my information is not correct I'll fix it; or if you read this and realize it's not right, please let me know.) Giving back to the community in such a way is VERY important. Speaking of importance, the main thing the church teaches about Christianity is LOVE--something I feel is very important to teach, and they welcome everyone. It's nearly a non-denominational church and I like that. Opens one's mind and heart to a plethora of topical options for serving the Lord.

The Bully Problem

In Muley's Universe (or the MuleyVerse) there is a big bully: Eddie Bubba. If you ever read Muley's Comix and Stories Issue 1, you saw that there is a story called Eddie Bubba's Baby Brother, who is actually as big as Eddie Bubba. The character, though, is created after a guy who towered over all the rest of us back in grade school.

During the years at Potts Camp High School in Mississippi, there was a bully named Derek (to keep from a lawsuit, I won't say his last name; but, if you're reading this Derek, I still think you're a jerk). He even picked up a kid smaller than me (in my same grade) by the neck--one handed!--and threw him several feet away.

One day, I had all I could stand. With my friends standing nearby, I called him on being a bully. I told him, as it is with bullies, that he really is weak of mind and strength and that is why he picks on people smaller than him. I told him that his own low self esteem was why he had to be bigger and badder than everyone else and if he met up with the right person he would get his rear handed to him!

The outcome? Exactly the same as what you see happening to Muley here...

In the true story, though, I didn't go to the fight. I found it is easier to run from guys bigger than me than to stand up to them. It's how I've lived this long!

Muley-Mini: The Meatatarian

Now, it's a well-known fact that I, Kevin L. Williams, the creator of all things "Muley" am an animal rights advocate and Vegetarian as much as 50% (I'm eating an apple as I type this).

The other 50%? I'm a Meatatarian. Yes, I'm an Eateverythingediblearious. Which gets me into trouble around the house.

For example, this morning at breakfast--sleepy from a rough night of sleeplessness--I kept cooking instead of offering up the usual Raisin Bran, oatmeal or muffins and poor Roy Duck...well, see here in this Muley-Mini:

"The Green Hornet" and "Are You Ready For Spring To Be Sprung?"

The Green Hornet: A Review

When I think of springtime, I think of things that are green. And when I think of green, I always think of my friend Kermit the Frog. And you know what else I think of?

Okay, well, not The Green Mulet and Cat-o; but, I do think of The Green Hornet! Do you know much history of the characters? If so, don't go to the movie expecting what you know. The film, starring and written by Seth Rogan, is absolutely a Seth Rogan film--he is who you know him to be, playing the character he always plays, so don't expect a heroic Green Hornet at all.

And knowing what I know, that Britt Reid is a descendent of The Lone Ranger, Reid should be heroic. It's okay to start as party-boy; but, I want character development and by the end of the film he has a change of heart, owns up to his actions and reactions, and ends up a hero! You can tell by this that Seth Rogan did not write Britt Reid to fall into this kind of character. (There is an homage to The Lone Ranger figured in when Kato is pouring silver bullets!)

The film's true stars, Kato and The Black Beauty, are everything you know and expect! Kato is brilliant, able to do anything, strong, fast-thinking and a heckuva fighter! He creates The Black Beauty and this car (or these cars) are every bit a beauty for sure, answering to their every need.

Edward James Olmos is in the film, and he portrays a great father-figure character. Unfortunately, he doesn't get to act on that portrayal too much because Rogan has written Reid to be more stand-offish than is necessary and causes more trouble than good.

Knowing what I know about The Green Hornet, I feel that another writer and actor than Rogan would have been a great to tend to this project. I almost feel as shot in the foot as I did when "What's-his-face" screwed up "Will Eisner's The Spirit." BUT! If you don't know anything about The Green Hornet, or are a fan of Rogan's--and here is where I become contradictory of myself--or, you go to the movie knowing what you know about The Green Hornet and plan to just have a good time, good fun, and expect a Seth Rogan movie, it's a fantastic film!

I did have fun! I was able to escape reality for a little while, and the characters were actually fun to watch. I am a HUGE fan of Kato's performer, Jay Chou, as well. Kato is a cool character, but Chou is just a slick dude!

So, what would have made it better? Add in a lot of this French Fan Film of The Green Hornet.

Now, a rant: What is the big deal with 3D? It's boring. I wear uncomfortable glasses to watch something that normally costs more to see and not much of it was even 3D! It's unnecessary. 3D is junk to me and should be showing in "limited theaters," not normal movies. I will gladly take a normal movie any day of the week. But, please keep the surround sound!

I'll post my thoughts about movie-going on another day.

But, for now, here is my good buddy and guest reviewer, DaMarco Randle with his review.

The Green Hornet, in general was a good movie. Seth Rogan should have been more athletic instead of letting Jay Chou do all the work. The casting directors could of done a better job; actually, Seth could have cast someone better for the role. Also, he could have been more knowledgeable in the Martial Arts field. There were equal amounts of explosions, people crushing, shooting and fight scenes. To be honest it was kind of predictable. I would like to see a movie where you cannot guess what is going to happen next. A movie like INCEPTION.

Kev's Involved in Other Folks' Business Again!

Okay, so you know we like to get all up in people's business--in a good way. When we found out that Alex and Todd were planning to get married and were entering a contest to win the engagement ring of a life-time, we had to help.

The contest required that they share a story and submit a comic strip about that story:

Alex was at home one day when Todd comes in from Rugby practice and offers to show her how they tackle. He reaches down and grabs her around the knees, lifting her into the air. Of course, you wouldn't pay much attention to the fact that dangling from the ceiling is a full-blast ceiling fan, right? So, he lifts her up and the blades of the fan begin to smack her. Painful at the time, funny to think about now.

But, when tasked with creating a comic strip you can only imagine how it ends in our version:

Okay, so she didn't lose her head, there was no blood, but it was funny regardless.

Unfortunately, misunderstanding of the rules about the deadline caused them to be tardy with the submission and they lost the contest. :( Regardless, here's hoping for a great marriage one day!

Christmas Day 2010

It's a day late; but, well, there was a plan for a video of Muley performing on guitar and singing The Beatles' "Happy Christmas," but, our video wasn't able to be converted for use. Instead, we offer the vocals which we COULD use along with an image of Muley taken during the filming. It won't be as neat as watching him perform on the guitar, but hopefully it'll be fun to hear his message in the song.

Also, mixed in will be images from our holiday happenings which we hope you'll enjoy. In these montage images, you can see Muley's visit to the Ronald McDonald House of Memphis as "Santa Mule" to play with the kids while Santa takes 'orders' for holiday delivery. You can always find ways to donate or volunteer with them by visiting the official website of the Ronald McDonald House of Memphis.

You will also see images of Muley and Family as they visit the Airways Police Department here in Memphis, TN. You know, too often the Memphis Police Department are seen in a negative light as kids see them cart off brothers, fathers, mothers, uncles, aunts, cousins--but, to show their heart Officer Vance Stacks helps head a group of officers who have toy and gift drives in which their police cars are filled to the max with gifts that are brought to the station and put on display for the kids of the community to come and get gifts to their hearts' desires during a time of year when they might not otherwise get any Christmas gifts. What these officers are doing from their hearts are the true meaning and spirit of the holiday, whatever you choose to celebrate!

Santa Mule is Hanging 'Round Town!

Muley will make an appearance to help pass out gifts to underprivileged children as "Santa Mule" at the Airways Blvd. Police Station at 2234 Truiit. They are located inside the old Army Depot on Airways near Ketchum. The Christmas dinner for the kids and their families starts at 6pm.

MULEY-MINI: THE MAGI PART 2

Happy Holidaze!

I call it that because the entire holiday season is spent with folks 'bustling' here and there and everywhere to buy those last-minute gifts for everyone. Of course, I always tell people that 1) my greatest gift is their friendship and 2) don't buy me anything--I'll get me stuff I need/want and say it's from them, and they can get something for themselves and say it's from me! It's easier and you're guaranteed to get what you want.

Gift-giving, it is said, began with the Magi who appeared to Jesus' manger with Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. But, what did these gifts mean? Well, gold represented that the child would be royalty. Frankincense was believed to carry our prayers to heaven. Myrrh (and now you'll get Roy Duck's meaning in the last posting) was used as an embalming oil and represented that the infant was born only to die for the world.

It was nice to know that something nobody expected was the gift of Salvation through Jesus. It is unappreciated by those who don't belive, underappreciated by those who do, and then there are those who are indifferent just 'because.' Around here, we're not preachy and aren't going to rub our readers' noses in our beliefs; but, there is reason to believe a lot more than there is reason to doubt!

And I also have reason to believe that Christ has a great sense of humor, and so won't mind that the following "Magi" have appeared in this Muley-Mini (also a failed idea for this year's Christmas card) bearing their own gifts:

Three Not-So Wise Men

Or, in Roy Duck's case, maybe a wise-quacker!

Of course, we never really knew (even from the Holy Bible) that Jesus' manger was made of wood and in a stable out back of the inn, and that the wise men (magi) were only numbered by 3 as they rode in on their camels this night with their gifts. As a matter of fact, the 'stable' could have been a small cave-carved portion in limestone, and there could have been 3 wise men or 20--there isn't a reference to that, only to the number of gifts. There also isn't - to my knowledge - any reference to a little drummer boy in the scriptures.

Still, here is a Muley-Mini which actually was pencilled to be this year's Christmas Card, although another idea won out!

When I quickly inked it, there is a bit of a tangent: can you see it? Hope it's a fun one for you! Oh, and the joke is a bit obscure about the myrrh: do you get it? Do you need an explanation?

It's Sinusy Season

Well, you all will know that (if your sinuses attack you) I always recommend the Neti Pot. Gravity pulls the water through your nose and washes out your sinuses, relieving you from sinus blockage, sinus headaches and pressure, drainage that could cause you to have a sore throat or get bronchitis.

I do recommend, also, that you use it as directed; not as Buford uses it here:

Of course, later, Buford caught Muley misusing it as well.

The brand I suggest is below. It's what I use. It will help you!

Letters to Papa and Granny

Everyone who knows me knows I say there were a few men who were important to me growing up: Jesus, Popeye, and Indiana Jones. Then, there are my heroes: Charles Schulz, Jim Henson and Hank Ketcham (and even Dan Aykroyd). That caused me to create a painting called "My Heroes" which was painted by hand and looks like stamps or silk-screen.

Let's digress to important people: After Jesus, most dear to my heart was a man who you all know as Papa Roy. He made a great grand-father (and father) figure and was always there to talk to me and (in those times I felt it was hard to deal with) when I would call and ask him, "Will I be all right?" He would reassure me, "Why, sure!" (MAN! I miss that phone call. Nobody else says it as asuredly as he did, so I quit asking and just hope now).

With Papa Roy, my heart's angel was Granny Ethel. Quiet, soft-spoken, unassuming, deep-thinking--she was the grandmother that a lot of us have (but, of course, I'm biased and have to say I like mine better than your's!). I didn't need a mother-figure in my world because my Mama was always there, even now. She's very involved in the whole "broken arm" thing. But, Granny was there as a guide for my religious thoughts, she was someone who (when she spoke) spoke the truth and spoke of important thoughts.

For example, one time as I sat with my Papa and Granny, I asked Granny, "What's the meaning of life?"

"Well," she said, "When all is said and done, I think the meaning of life is to love everybody as much as you can, do as much good as you can, love the Lord, and try to make yourself and others happy."

That made total sense to me. It's a good definition of the meaning of life! So, I turn and asked Papa Roy, "What's the meaning of life to you, Papa Roy?"

"Don't dip snuff!" He exclaimed, without even a pause for thought. "It almost killed me! I got so addicted to it I would use that junk instead of eat, and I wasted down to nothing! I was weak and sick and couldn't hardly do my work! Yep, don't do snuff!"

Umm, ok! Ha ha. In the whole scheme of things, I suppose I can see where not doing snuff is important to defining life: if you use it and die because you didn't eat anymore, then that doesn't sustain life and you can't love everyone and so forth.

Papa Roy was never without his overalls, olive green work shirt, t-shirt under that, and work shoes. And, you could always find him in a cap of some sort, chewing away on some Juicy Fruit chewing gun. Granny Ethel was always dressed in a light shirt with either a t-shirt or tank-top under that, a skirt or pants, and an apron. More often than not she wore open-toed house shoes with socks, or a pair of slippers. Now, this is at home. Papa Roy was wearing whatever he might work in that day; Granny was dressed down at home--but, if you were taking them out, or it was a holiday, or it was a special occasion, they were dressed UP! Yes, Papa Roy would dress UP in his finest overalls, olive green work shirt, t-shirt under that, and work shoes--all new, all clean. Granny Ethel would put in her teeth, fix her hair, and my Mama and aunts had her some nice clothes purchased that they would fix her up in. Both were a handsome couple for grandparents!

Anyway, in 1988 my mother re-married and we moved to Munford, TN. My heart ached because everything I knew was in Holly Springs, MS, and Cornersville, MS. My grandparents would now be nearly 2-and-a-half hours away. But, if I didn't call them I would send them a letter.

Here is a letter from circa 1988 that I sent to Papa Roy and Granny Ethel, and an un-dated Father's Day Card I drew for Papa Roy probably in 1988 or 1989.

I'm sure they either understood that the heart symbolized "Eye love U", or they may have wondered, "Why'd Kevin draw a heart eating a cookie with the letter U on it?" Papa and Granny in their usual "costumes." The logo back then was a "W" up top and an "M" on bottom connected by lines and framed by brackets (W for Williams and M for Mule, back then I called everything under Williams/Mule Productions).

Here's where you can see my love of the Joel Chandler Harris books about Uncle Remus. At the time I drew this (from 1980 up until the early 90's maybe) I used to let the characters all speak in a really southern dialect like from that book or from Snuffy Smith:

Here, you see the ultra rare autographs of Buford the Dog and Roy Duck. Apparently, the drawings were colored in crayon and were rubber-cemented into the card, as was some money (that's what the "For Gum" is pointing to, I'm sure).

One thing I miss is how Papa and Granny would serve as an audience to my "live art" display at their house. I would spread all my art stuff out on the floor and draw, paint, anything...and they would watch. I loved the remarks like, "It's funny how you can take a bunch of lines and make something like that!"

Just a look into my past and history and more about my wonderful grandparents. Wish you could have all met them--they were fantastic!

Thanksiving - Part 3

So far, the attempt at keeping the pet turkey from being eaten has been a success...mainly because (around here) we don't eat pet turkeys!

Someone asked me recently, "What was that dinner in A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving?" Well, it was prepared by Snoopy and included buttered toast, jelly beans, popcorn and pretzel sticks. YUMMY! The after effects being more sugar-high than a tryptophan-low.

So, using the comments section below: what are you thankful for? How will you spend Thanksgiving?

I'll be spending the holiday with my extended family! We gather together and eat, eat, eat! Hopefully, your meal will be plentiful, your time together will be the stuff memories are made of, and happiness will be yours on this day and every day!

Hope everyone is doing well and are headed toward a great holiday weekend! The great feast that is laid out before us on this day can't go to waste. I don't mean that we will let it go to waste by not eating it; but, that it might go to waste because we forget to be thankful for it.

I'm also thankful for many other things besides food: clothes, shelter, work, friends, the talents given me for art or puppetry; I'm thankful for vision, hearing, speaking. I'm thankful also that my friends can have all this stuff, too. I'm thankful for the salvation that Jesus provided from the cross. I'm thankful for friends I've known that I've lost touch with (but who are always on my mind), and I'm thankful for the friends I have that are close to my heart. I'm thankful for the opportunity to meet new friends that the future holds for me.

I'm thankful for having known my Papa Roy and Granny Ethel as long as I knew them, and thankful for my mom who calls me daily (unless I all her first) and who constantly watches over me.

I'm thankful that you are taking the time of your busy life to share my thoughts and to allow me an opportunity to share these thoughts and to share entertainment with you through Muley. And, if you'll chuckle a little bit when you see the silly Muley things I give you then I'm thankful for that, too.

There is nothing more powerful than laughter, and nothing more beautiful than a smile.

Thoughts of Turkey Legs...

First: December 11, from 9 am - 11 am, Muley will appear at Breakfast with Santa at the Ronald McDonald House of Memphis. This is his pet charity, so to help be sure to visit them at www.rmhmemphis.org!

Although we have a pet turkey in the Muley-verse that will never be eaten, Muley and his pals can't understand--even when told--this turkey is not going to be eaten; so, they set out to find ways to save it each year. Here's one small instance of this attempt.

I know in the header Muley is dressed as a pilgrim on the hunt; but, he'd (of course) never cap a turkey (unless it was talking through a movie he was watching at the theater).

Do Bugs Get Depressed?

Well, I suppose that (after seeing these next two Muley Comix strips) you'll be able to guess which is my least favorite of the rodents that have intruded my house this past summer.

Now, in the case of this particular comic strip, I have often wondered why an insect gets itself into such compromising and dangerous positions. Such positions are: crawling on my counter; crawling on my floor; crawling on my wall; crawling around the trashcan; crawling around anywhere that I can see it. Almost as if it has a death-wish!

Well, I fixed 'em! There is a product (and here comes my PSA) called Terro Ant Killer. You can read about it in a blog by clicking here. Basically, you have these little cards that you set down near the ants, and you put a drop or two of this stuff on the little card, and the ants flock to it. After a day or two: you're ant free.

Now, I know someone out there is going to say, "You're so cruel, Kevin!" Yet, I have to say that I didn't tell those ants to put themselves in such a dangerous position. It was their death-wish, not mine. And, it's also not nearly as cruel as what I caught Muley doing to them (which you'll see in the next comic strip).

As usual, what goes around comes around (which you'll also see in the next comic strip); so, I expect any day now to find a big card with a blotch of clear liquid that smells and tastes like chocolate.

Celebrating 30 Years of Pac-Man

Before there was Playstation 3 with my all-time favorite video game "Ghostbusters: The Video Game," and before there were awesome Star Wars games for XBox, there was the Atari system. I think I prefer the one handle-one button control system even if the graphics are very pixellated and boring. After my last move, I found my old Atari system and plugged it in, grabbed my Pac-Man and went to town! It's a little fuzzy on the screen (don't know if it's the cartridge, the program, the system or the TV); but, it sure is still fun!

Well, we wanted to do a Muley-Mini to celebrate 30 years of Pac-Man! Hope you have a fun-filled day after reading this with plenty of Power Pellets at your disposal to get rid of your enemies! Chomp Chomp!

Happy Veteran's Day!

We aren't political by any means, but I do have a high appreciation for our military men and women of all ages and ranks because they put their necks out on the line for us daily. Whether wartime or in times of "peace," they are always the busy people watching out for all the rest of us Americans!

In my own family, I have a great stepfather who served in Vietnam and has told me the horror stories of that period of time--not just during the war and fighting, but also upon returning home to the picketing many who weren't boycotting and spitting upon the war itself, but ungratefully spat upon our returning soldiers who fought, lost limbs, lost friends or lost lives like my Uncle Ellis who I never had the pleasure to know.

Unfortunately, these same kinds of behavior exist even today. Where is the appreciation? When there are "Christian" groups who are picketing at a fallen soldier's funeral: 1) you are not human if you cannot respect the family any better than that and 2) we're serving a different Jesus and God! You cannot be a Christian if you do not have Christ's love in you, and to behave in such a way is absolutely not Christ's way. Shame on you. (Okay, so, that's my political and religious stance).

Now, I have friends who are in the military, whether overseas in the Middle East, home now either returned or headed that way, and to those friends of mine (you know who you are) I appreciate you, your hard work and dedication to keeping me, my friends, my family, and my country safe. I wish I had an ounce of the courage you have to do what you do.

So, for those who have served: Thank you! I may not otherwise be allowed to be free to draw, perform puppetry, or post on the internet if not for you. To those serving: Thank you for maintaining my freedom of speech, religion, and life.

Muley was able to perform the Santana/Rob Thomas song "Smooth" at the First Congo talent show on October 18 with much success and fun! Mark Allen, a fantastic guitar player, was there as well. After Muley performed, Mark leaned over to our pastor and asked, "I have to follow that?" We told him later, "At least you played your guitar for real--Muley is only acting." Whereas the comic strips are created by drawing them in #2 pencil on 7x17" pieces of Bristol, then inked using a Windsor & Newton Series 7 sable brush and Black India Ink (or technical pens, or both), and then the pencils erased with a white Magic Rub eraser--then scanned and cleaned up in Photoshop, where we also add colors and sometimes letters (we're beginning to try hand-lettering)...and who knows what else goes into making the comic strip; Muley-Mini's are little quick-sketched comics that take closer to a minute than 3 or 4 hours ("mini" in this title stands for both small and 'minute'). Sometimes they'll have color, sometimes not.
