True Meaning of the Holiday?

Well, it's that time of the year again when all the stores' registers ring with the sound of commercialism at its best! Cha-CHING! More stores make more money during the day after Thanksgiving sales through Christmas than probably the whole year. What's that mean to me?

I have to stand in line for nearly an hour now just to get a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread at some stores. Luckily, the local grocery store is open 24/7, so I can get in and out quickly at 1:30 am.

But, it's the whole commercialism thing that bothers me. People are forgetting that more famous reason for the season, and watching "A Charlie Brown Christmas," and then finding the passages twice in a row (I opened up to the passage in the Bible directly, and then again in a church hymnal), I'd like to share with you Luke 2:8-14 as Linus shared with Charlie Brown:

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of heavenly host praising God, and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

So, when that hour of waiting for milk and bread is upon me, I think back on the reason for the season and am reminded why it's a good time of year.
